Crankshaft Sensor

Function: This is a MRE (Magnetic Resistance Element) sensor detects the Engine revolution speed, the angular position of the crankshaft by means of a crankshaft mounted target wheel.
This data enables the ECU to determine the position of the piston relative to the fuel injection cycle .

Location: The sensor is mounted on the timing cover, under the oil filler cap.

Signal: Analogue voltage output. Voltage changes amplitude when the crankshaft target disc passes by the sensor.

Removal and Replacement Guide:

IMPORTANT !
The following information must be used in conjunction with the procedures given in the Service Manuals applicable to both the engine and its installation (the vehicle or machine).
DO NOT work on any part of the engine until you have read and understood all the relevant service information.

Removal:

1 Stop the engine and allow it to cool.

2 Uncouple the electrical connector A.
3 Undo the retaining bolt B.
Carefully withdraw the sensor assembly C from the fly wheel housing

Replacement:
Replacement is the reversal of removal.

Torque Settings:
B 8 Nm

Testing the Device: See Crankshaft Sensor - Troubleshooting

1 Disconnect the harness from the crankshaft sensor.
2 Switch the ignition on.
3 Check the voltage at the harness pins.
Pin 1 -5V (Signal voltage)
Pin 2 - 0V (Ground return)
Pin 3 - 5V (Supply voltage
4 If readings are incorrect, disconnect the harness at the ECU and check harness continuity, repair/replace if necessary.
5 If the harness continuity is OK, replace the sensor and run the engine, if the fault remains, replace the ECU.
For information: When running the engine the sensor can only be tested with an oscilloscope. It gives out a 5 Volt Hall Effect square wave signal.

IMPORTANT !
Use the multi-meter on the harness connector pins.
DO NOT use the meter on the ECU pins.
